Hawks Nest State Park
east of Fayettville is among West Virginia's most popular
state park destinations. Protecting 270 acres on the northern rim of
the New River Gorge, the park is beloved for its panoramic vistas --
from the lodge, aerial tram, and from its overlooks. Stone
buildings, including the park museum and main overlook visit
complex, were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and may
be of particular interest to historians. The park's main overlook,
Hawks Nest, was originally called Marshall's Pillar, named for U.S.
Chief Justice John Marshall, who visited the site in the early
1800s. http://www.hawksnestsp.com/

Pipestem Resort State

2,400 wooded acres include part of the gorge of the Bluestone
National Scenic River, a spectacular setting for luxury facilities
that include two lodges, two restaurants, and a championship golf
course. http://www.pipestemresort.com/recreation.html

Grandview State Park,
in Raleigh County, northeast of Beckley,
WV, was acquired by the
National Park Service in 1990 and absorbed into the New River Gorge
National River. Thousands of visitors tour its trails and overlooks
every year and, in summer, attend the outdoor dramas
"Hatfields and McCoys" and "Honey in the Rock," in repertoire
at the park's Cliffside Amphitheater since 1967. http://www.nps.gov/neri/gwvc.htm
